Referrals

To see one of the doctors at Eye Specialists Centre, you will need a referral from your general practitioner (GP), optometrist or medical specialist. Referrals from optometrists and GPs last 12 months, referrals from medical specialists are valid for 3 months.

Please bring the following with you:
  • Referral letter from your optometrist, GP or medical specialist
  • Spectacles and/or spectacle prescription. If wearing contact lenses, please bring a contact lens case so that they can be removed and stored safely prior to examination.
  • A summary of your medical history, current medications and allergies
  • Medicare card
  • Private health insurance card (e.g. HCF, MBF, Medibank Private, NIB)
  • Pension card or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) card
  • Sunglasses to reduce glare after pupil dilation

What to expect

As your first consultation may require extensive examination and tests, you can expect to stay up to two (2) hours. Due to the need to sometimes treat patients with ad hoc eye emergencies, waiting times may be extended. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Patients will be seen by the orthoptist first. They will have their vision and eye pressure tested. You will then see your doctor, who may order more tests if deemed necessary.

Payment is made on the day of your appointment. We accept cash, cheque, EFTPOS, VISA and Mastercard. You will be informed of costs by our staff. Informed written financial consent is provided prior to surgical procedures. Discounts are available for pensioners.

Procedures such as laser can be performed on the same day during your visit. If surgery is required, the timing of this will depend on the medical urgency. As a precautionary measure, patients should have an escort for transportation following their procedures.

Patients' pupils will be dilated at every visitation and will blur vision for up to 4 hours. Patients should have an escort to assist with transportation or take public transport. You will be unable to drive for up to 4 hours following your appointment.
